The reason for the season…
On January 31, 1957, the governor general of Canada issued a proclamation stating: “a day of general thanksgiving to ALMIGHTY GOD for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed – to be observed on the 2nd Monday in October”. However, this celebration started as far back as 1578 by the Northwest Passage explorers giving thanks for surviving their long journeys along the northern coast of North America via waterways through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
Thanksgiving Day is a holiday to give thanks for the blessings in one’s life, particularly the harvest. It comes with a day off work for many Canadians. It is a clear fact right from the outset of this holiday, that people give thanks to God for their harvests in the passing year. There is no argument about this, even though the secularization of society tries to leave out the “GOD-FACTOR” nowadays. Nevertheless, history confirms the giving of thanks to God.
As human beings, we are prone to focus on what we do not have. However, when we start thanking God for the things we usually take for granted, our perspective would change about how much we do have. Therefore, “in everything, let us give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning us.” (1Thessalonians 5:18). Giving thanks to God keeps our hearts in right relationship with Him and saves us from a host of emotional hurts and attitudes that has the tendency of robbing us of the peace that God wants us to enjoy as individuals and as a community (Philippians 4:6–7).
Hence, as we celebrate this season of thanksgiving, let us with a gladsome mind praise the Lord for He is kind; His mercies endure for ever.
And friend, beyond the season of thanksgiving, God has a better plan for our lives; this is another notable reason for which we owe Him THANKS. For He says: “For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end” (Jeremiah 29:11).
NO MATTER WHAT, GIVE GOD THANKS!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
